Killarney Trail Blog, Feb. 10-17

We’ve got a plan to improve low snow conditions! The city will be moving snow from the lake onto the trails on Tuesday, Feb. 10, and Wostawea is organizing three snow shovelling efforts to fill in remaining bare spots. If you can lend a hand, brings your skis and a shovel to the trailer in the field today (Tuesday Feb. 10) at 4pm, or tomorrow (Wednesday Feb. 11) at 10am or 4pm. The organizers of the Canadian Masters Championships kindly ask that everyone stay off trails 2, 3, and 4 for the next two weeks to maintain optimal conditions for the races. Oh, and keep snow dancing!

  • Might be Killarney’s best skate and classic conditions of the year today. Enough snow to refresh the trails without making them too soft.

  • City groomers can we please get the rest of the park groomed for both the citizens of Fredericton and also the visitors from away, who want to explore other trails than the racing courses! Thanks

    • The race thing is quite frankly ridiculous. 2 full weeks kn an 8 week season where the people that pay for the trails are told to stay off.

    • Preferences are preferences, but right now with the nights still very cold I’ve been using the violet as long as I get out well before noon. If you were going later, I’d be inclined to go to use red with these sunny days just below zero.

  • Very good conditions early this morning. A bit soft because I was early, but the trails that were groomed were great. Most of 7 to 8 and 9 were groomed last night. The trails around the lodge were freshly groomed. Thanks to the groomer who was out very early to groom the trails for the skiers.

  • Noon skate, mixed conditions. #1 and #7 from the entry to the service gate were on yesterday’s groom. Choppy and soft but still reasonable. #7 big hill I’d say – Go while you can – but watch for some parts where some rocks are still at, or just below, the surface. Warm and a few grooms and it won’t be ok for long. #6, #8, #9 were all really good with a fresh groom (yesterdays groom on #9).

  • Soft for skate skiers Im sure as lots of deep tracks in the snow. Classic was great as long as one got out before it warmed up too much. Outer 7 was great !!

  • Soft and slow as expected with fresh snow, but still worth it. If you’re skating, you’ll want to stick where there were multiple passes. I started up #6 from Lone Pine but it was too narrow and soft and bailed on that. Like other comment from Scott, the classic track was set right in the middle, I went down #5 and you’re in a pickle trying climb out with the track dead center. It should be fantastic after some cold nights and a couple groom passes.

  • Great skiing today, but for some reason the classic track was right in the middle of the trail on some parts. Hard to skate ski without going over it. Must be a reason I don’t know of, but doesn’t make much sense to me.
