COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS

drawing new skiers to cross-country skiing through outreach

Wostawea provides outreach programs to draw more people into cross-country skiing, with an emphasis on people and groups who might not otherwise have the means or be aware of this outdoor activity. Volunteer coaches are involved and we provide ski gear free of charge to participants in a fun and welcoming atmosphere.

Please get in touch with Mary Murdoch Luiker if you would like to get involved and if you have new ideas for outreach.

Here is a list of our outreach initiatives:

  • Newcomers to Canada: Launched in 2019, this is a learn to ski program in partnership with the Multi-Cultural Association of Fredericton. This program has introduced over 300 newcomers from over 20 countries of origin to skiing.

  • Under One Sky: Launched in 2022, this program is an introduction to cross-country skiing for Indigenous people. This program engages kindergarten children, their teachers, and families.

  • Kehkimin Language School: Launched in 2023, this is a cross-country skiing activity for Indigenous children ages 4-7 years, and their teachers from the Kehkimin Language School that is based at Killarney Lake Park.

  • 2SLGBTQ+: This initiative began in 2024 to draw in people of this community to a safe and inclusive space to learn about cross-country skiing and enjoy the outdoors.

  • University Students: This initiative began in 2024 to invite local university students to try cross-country skiing.
