SPRINTS: WHAT TO EXPECT
Wostawea’s Sprint event is a non-sanctioned skate ski event focused on friendly competition in a fun and exciting format. Cross-country skiing sprint races are exciting action-packed events for spectators, athletes and officials. Wostawea held its first sprint event in February 2020 and had to pause the event in 2021 and 2022. Sprint events were held in 2023 and 2024.
The 1300 metre Sprint race starts with a qualification round which resembles a 15 second interval start competition. Once a category’s qualifier is complete, the athletes are distributed into heats. Skiers must be U14 or older and there are female and male categories.
The heats and subsequent rounds of the race typically have 4 to 6 athletes competing head to head over the course with the first skiers across the line going to the next round, eventually leading to a final where the fastest skiers compete.
Participants will enjoy the challenge and camaraderie of this event. Killarney Lake Park will be the venue and there will be an emcee, exciting finishes, lots of adrenaline, great tunes and spectator cheering. Draw prizes and refreshments/treats will be provided.
Details on the 2025 Sprint event will be posted this fall.
