2024 MCAF OUTREACH PROGRAM

Wostawea’s popular outreach program that engages newcomers to Fredericton through the Multicultural Association of Fredericton (MCAF) will launch its eighth year in 2024!

A four week ski program is offered and is held at Killarney Lake Park. Skiers register through MCAF and are placed in appropriate groupings.

All sessions are held on Saturday afternoons as follows:

  • January 20th - orientation session

  • January 27, February 3, 10, 17, 24 - ski lessons at Killarney Lake Park

ADULT SKATE SKI CLINIC: JAN 20 & FEB 3, 1:00-3:00 PM

Would you like to to learn how to skate ski or improve your skills? Wostawea is pleased to offer early-season skate ski clinics again this year. Participants must be at least 16 years old, be members of Wostawea, and have their own skate ski equipment.

Lesson Details:

  • January 20th and February 3rd, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Killarney Lake Park. (Back-up date for weather cancellation: February 10th.)

  • Participants will receive four hours of instruction in total.

  • Participants must be at least 16 years old, be members of Wostawea, and have their own skate ski equipment.

  • Cost is $50 for the two-weekend program

2024 YOUTH SKI LESSON PROGRAM

Our popular youth ski lesson programs are held on eight Saturdays at Killarney Lake Park. Programs include Bunnies, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Skills Development, and Track Attack.

Registration numbers are within a certain level so that lessons will be held between 10:00AM to 12:00PM for everyone.

Skiers will be placed in appropriate sessions. All skiers will be notified of the details of their program.

2024 ADULT SKI PROGRAM

Our 8 week classic ski lesson program is held each Saturday morning from January 6th to March 2nd.

Capacity will be set at 60 as in past years but there will be provision for a waiting list that will be used to fill the vacancies which inevitably occur within the first week or two after lessons start.

Half of the spaces (30) will be reserved for raw beginners while the other 30 spaces will be for those with some experience or those hoping to upgrade their skills.

Skiers will be placed in appropriate session, either from 9:30-11:00 am or from 11:30-1:00 pm.

If there is insufficient snow or if conditions are unsafe, lessons may be cancelled although every effort will be made to conduct lessons.

2023 WOSTAWEA LOPPET - CLASSIC (CCNB LOPPET #3)

The word loppet is Scandinavian in origin and means a mass participation cross-country ski event designed for skiers of all ages and abilities. Think of it as a fun run on skis. The idea is to get out there with other like-minded, fun-loving people who like to ski and have a good time. It is a great opportunity to meet other club members —and even others who may have travelled here from other parts of the province.

9:30 am: for participants expecting to ski for 4 hours or more

2023 WOSTAWEA SPRINT EVENT

What Can You Expect?

  • A non-sanctioned skate ski event focused on friendly competition in a fun and exciting format

  • 1300 metre race course along the trails of Killarney Lake Park

  • Each skier will ski at least twice in a standard ski sprint format

  • Participants must be U14 or older

  • Female and male categories

  • Draw prizes

Participants will enjoy the challenge and camaraderie of this event. A series of qualifying rounds will be held and then several heats, semi-finals and finals on an expertly groomed sprint track laid out on the trails of Killarney Lake Park. There will be an emcee, exciting finishes, lots of adrenaline, great tunes and spectator cheering.

MCAF 4 WEEK LEARN TO SKI PROGRAM

Wostawea is very proud of its partnership with the Multicultural Association of Fredericton (MCAF). Since 2018 Wostawea has welcomed newcomer families in the Fredericton region to Wostawea and the great sport of cross country skiing.

Skiers learn the basics In a safe and fun-filled family setting, with Wostawea coaches and their helpers guiding participants in learning how to cross-country ski, explore our outdoor parks, and enjoy the snow and nature that comes with our winters.

We welcome adults and children aged 8 years and older. Lessons are held at Killarney Lake Park over four Saturdays, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. Skis, boots, and poles are provided.

There is no cost to participants and all skiers must register through MCAF each fall.

2023 MARITIME CUP - NB CUP #3 AND #4

Wostawea is celebrating its 50th anniversary as Fredericton’s cross country ski club and will be hosting the 2023 Maritime Cup on January 21st and 22nd.

The club invites cross country skiers of all ages and levels to participate. In past years, close to 200 skiers from all regions of New Brunswick have taken to the beautiful trails of Killarney Lake Park for the classic ski event on Saturday and the skate ski event on Sunday. Distances vary and the energy and fellowship is second to none.

ADULT SKATE SKI CLINICS

Would you like to to learn how to skate ski or improve your skills? Wostawea is pleased to offer early-season skate ski clinics again this year.

We have space for up to 30 adult skiers, beginner or intermediate, for lessons on the following dates:

January 7th and 14th, 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm at Killarney Lake Park. The back-up date for weather cancellation is January 28th.

Participants will receive four hours of instruction in total.

Participants must be at least 16 years old, be members of Wostawea, and have their own skate ski equipment.

Cost: $40 for the two-weekend program

JACKRABBIT and ADULT SKI LESSONS

Please note that there will be no lessons on Saturday, January 21 because the Maritime Cup is being hosted by Wostawea at Killarney Lake Park. Lessons will extend to Saturday, March 4th.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

8 week lesson program, held each Saturday morning from January 7th to March 4th

Skiers will be placed in appropriate session, as below:

Group A: 9:45 am - 11:15 am

Lessons for Bunny (4-5 yrs), Level 1 (6-7 yrs) and Level 2 (7-8 yrs): 9:45 - 11:00

Hot Chocolate: 11:00 - 11:15

Group B: 11:30 am - 1:45 pm

Lessons for Level 3 (8-9 yrs), Level 4 (9-10 yrs), Track Attack (10-12 yrs) and Skills Development (8+ yrs): 11:30 - 1:30

Hot Chocolate: 1:30 - 1:45

ADULT LESSONS

8 week lesson program, held each Saturday morning from January 7th to March 4th

Skiers will be placed in appropriate session, either from 9:45 - 11:00 or 11:30 - 1:30

Adult ski instruction is available for skiers learning the basics of classic skiing for the first time or for skiers with some classic experience wanting to take their skills and techniques to a new level.

SUNDAY SKI TOUR: THATCH ROAD TOUR - FEBRUARY 21, 2021

This ski tour led by Jan Bonga is a wonderful opportunity to ski amongst the silver maples along the St. John River near Oromocto. Please meet at the Thatch Road parking area at 1.30 PM. To get there follow the highway to Oromocto – 1.3 km past the airport entrance, where the road makes a sharp turn to the right, keep going straight onto Thatch Road and continue for less than 0.5 km to the parking area (plowed in the winter). This is a boat launch and picnic area in the summer.

INAUGURAL VIRTUAL WOSTAWEA LOPPET - FEBRUARY 12-14, 2021

Wostawea is hosting its first every virtual loppet - February 12, 13 and 14, 2021

  • Skiers will sign up online to ski a set distance along the beautiful trails of Killarney Lake Park.

  • Distances will range from 2 kms for Bunnies to 42 kms for skiers pushing the limits and there will be lots of options in between.

  • The loppet will take place over three days. This will limit congestion at the park and along the trails, and skiers and their families will have lots of flexibility to choose the day and time that works best.

  • There will be no bibs, no timing chips, no mass starts, and no drink stations. Timing will be self-timing.

  • Rules about physical distancing and mask wearing will be communicated.

  • The Morimanno Family Cup will be awarded again this year to the family that skis the most kilometres.

  • All loppet details are being finalized and will be posted soon.

Sunday Ski Tour - McLeod Hill - 1:30pm, February 7 2021

Liz and Ron Smith are hosting the second annual McLeod Hill Road Sunday Ski Tour this weekend!

Date: Sunday February 7
Time: 1:30pm

This Sunday Ski Tour is approximately 8 km. Please be prepared to answer COVID screening questions upon arrival, provide your name and contact details and wear a mask.

Park in the small lay-by on the right just after a big turn in McLeod Hill Road and right before the Lint Road on the right, about 3.5 Km up McLeod Hill. The blue "X" on the Locator map marks the spot. Head down the small skidoo trail. Follow the bright orange flagging tape (placed at intersections only). Eventually, you will cross over a bog and wend your way back to the beginning.

Enjoy this chance to get out and try other ski routes!

COVID-19 UPDATE, JANUARY 7, 2021

While in the orange phase of COVID-19 recovery we are not allowed to hold  our adult skate clinics. If you are registered in these clinics we will send you an email directly in the next couple of days to lay out our options. We fully hope to host these clinics but will refund skiers unable to participate on the rescheduled dates or in the unfortunate circumstance where we’re not able to hold them at all. 

Thank you for your patience, everyone, and at least the trails are open and beckoning for us to get out and ski!

CLINIC OVERVIEW: Four hours of skate ski instruction held at Killarney Lake Park on two consecutive Saturdays from 1 to 3 pm. Skiers must pre-register.
